Our Goal :To empower underprivileged communities and lead them toward sustainable development by ensuring their rights, good governance, social justice, and gender equality. To achieve this goal, the organization works in coordination with national development plans, local government structures, and international development policies.

History & Background

SEIAM was born in 2000 from the vision of a group of passionate young people led by Mr. Md. Masum Billah, who recognized that real change comes from within communities themselves. What started as a grassroots initiative in Khulna district has evolved into a trusted development organization working across multiple sectors. For over two decades, we’ve maintained our founding belief that every person regardless of their background possesses the potential to drive meaningful change when given the right support and opportunities. Our journey reflects our commitment to walking alongside marginalized communities, not simply working for them, ensuring that development is participatory, dignified, and sustainable.

The Impact We Create

SEIAM’s work touches lives across multiple dimensions—from reducing tobacco-related diseases and environmental degradation to strengthening community governance and empowering persons with disabilities. We’ve helped communities access clean water, improved reproductive health services, and supported youth in becoming skilled changemakers. Through our programs in disaster preparedness, sustainable agriculture, and legal awareness, we’re building resilience at the grassroots level. Our impact isn’t measured just in numbers, but in transformed mindsets, empowered individuals, and communities that are better equipped to advocate for their rights and shape their own futures while protecting the environment for generations to come.

Our Strategic Approach

We believe sustainable development cannot be imposed—it must emerge from within. Our approach centers on participatory processes that respect local knowledge while introducing evidence-based innovations. We combine direct community interventions with policy advocacy, ensuring that grassroots voices reach decision-makers. Research informs our programs, while our programs generate insights for broader systemic change. We work holistically, recognizing that health, environment, governance, and economic opportunity are interconnected. By fostering partnerships across sectors and maintaining political neutrality, we create space where diverse stakeholders can collaborate. Our work is guided by principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusion—ensuring that marginalized voices, especially women, persons with disabilities, and youth, are not just heard but actively shape the development agenda.

At the heart of our organization is a commitment to accountable, transparent, and community-centered leadership.

SEIAM places women’s empowerment at the center of its development work, operating across multiple divisions to address women’s economic, legal, health, and social needs simultaneously. On the economic front, the organization has established over 800 women as small entrepreneurs through vocational training, social business models, and entrepreneurship support programs, directly contributing to a 25–30% income increase in 1,500 households. In the legal and rights arena, SEIAM has helped more than 20 women get elected at the local government level, provided legal assistance and mediation support to thousands of families — many of them women-headed — and runs active campaigns against violence against women through its Human Rights and Good Governance division. For health, the organization has delivered reproductive health and family planning services to 5,000 families across 15 unions, while 3,200 women have directly received mental health counseling services. SEIAM also specifically engages 250 women farmers in sustainable agricultural initiatives and runs a Women’s Development Forum at the community level to strengthen grassroots leadership. Cutting across all of this is a Gender Equality Policy embedded in the organization’s administrative framework, ensuring that women are not treated as a single program category but as active participants in every aspect of SEIAM’s work — from field implementation to policy advocacy.

SEIAM is a Khulna-based Bangladeshi NGO, registered since 2004, that essentially tries to tackle almost every major development challenge facing a coastal, climate-vulnerable community all at once — from convincing people not to smoke and helping over 1,000 farmers switch to organic methods, to staging more than 250 folk theatre performances that carry social messages to audiences exceeding 100,000 people, and training over 800 women to run their own small businesses. Across 13 thematic divisions, they work with 50,000+ direct beneficiaries spread across Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat districts, with a team of roughly 46 staff supported by over 100 volunteers. They have provided legal assistance to more than 2,000 families, trained 1,200+ youth in leadership and entrepreneurship, delivered reproductive health services to 5,000 families across 15 unions, and helped implement smoke-free environments in 80% of government offices in Khulna city — with the district tobacco control taskforce winning the National Best Performance Award three times. What holds it all together is a philosophy that development cannot be just economic — it has to be social, environmental, and cultural simultaneously — and that the people most affected by poverty and inequality, backed by partnerships with bodies like WHO, IRRI, and the Red Crescent, should be the primary drivers of their own change, not just passive recipients of aid.
