Call for Strict Measures to Control Tobacco in Khulna

SEIAM

The Khulna District Task Force Committee, formed to implement the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage Control Act, held a meeting today. The discussion was attended by representatives from the Department of Narcotics Control, Khulna Metropolitan Police, Islamic Foundation, SIAM, and AID Foundation.

Speakers at the meeting expressed concern that tobacco companies are using various strategies around educational institutions in Khulna city to encourage adolescents and youth to use tobacco. They are distributing free cigarettes and other promotional gifts, and attracting the younger generation through different campaigns.

The speakers also noted that, despite the import ban on e-cigarettes, vaping devices and e-cigarettes are being sold freely in multiple locations across Khulna. Many parents are unable to recognize these devices, causing their children to unknowingly enter the world of addiction.

The representatives at the meeting emphasized, “Effective action must be taken immediately to protect our children. Tobacco is the gateway to drugs, so it is essential to enforce the Tobacco Control Act quickly and strictly, including through mobile courts.”

The meeting stressed the importance of a coordinated initiative among all relevant departments to ensure effective law enforcement.
